Finding the perfect present for the writer in your life can be a fun challenge. Writers have unique tastes and love tools and inspirations that spark their creativity. Whether they’re working on their first novel, journaling daily, or taking writing workshops, thoughtful gifts that cater to their literary passions can make a big impact.
To help in your quest, I’ve put together this list of favorite gifts for writers:
1. Writing Software
Many writers end up writing in Word or Google Docs. However, some innovative writers have created writing tools to help writers plot out their stories and manage the writing process.
My personal recommendation is Scrivener, and I feel that right now it’s considered the best writing software for creative writers. I absolutely love the ability to build out a storyboard in advance, move scenes around easily, set word count goals, and more. It was truly built with writers in mind, and I think it makes it easier to stay on track (and feel more accomplished while I’m working).
What’s even better? It’s not a subscription. It’s $59.99 for a one-time license for either Mac or PC. (That’s basically unheard of in the software arena these days.)
2. Writing Sprints Timer
I got this one from a video Victoria Aveyard made about her writing sprints timer, but I think it’s the perfect gift for aspiring writers. Writing sprints are a great way to stay on task during the writing journey, and I personally find them really helpful when I only have a small amount of time each day to dedicate to my writing life.
3. A Cool Keyboard
Right now, “creamy keyboards” are all the rage…and when I first read that phrase, I rolled my eyes. But then I heard the noise creamy keyboards make, and now…I get it. The sound of these keyboards is so satisfying, making it a great gift for someone in the middle of a writing project.
If you don’t go with a keyboard for it’s sound, though, you might want to consider something that will spice up their writing space (like a colorful or LED keyboard - perfect for late-night writers), or a typewriter keyboard (perfect for the writer friend with a passion for the dark academia aesthetic or vintage vibes).
4. Personal Library Management Tools
It’s pretty safe to say that your favorite writer is a fan of reading. A fun gift that I’ve seen circulating on BookTube is a personal library organization tool. Just like the real libraries, you can scan your books with a scanner that pairs with the Libib app. Book lovers with a massive home library will thank you for this top tier organization system.
5. Writing Craft Books
If you’re shopping for a writer, books about writing are pure gold. They offer a mix of inspiration, guidance, and practical tips. Here are some must-reads every writer should have on their shelf:
"On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft" by Stephen King
I’m scared of Stephen King’s other books, so this is the only one of his I’ve managed to read. However, it was amazing and very insightful to the writing process. "On Writing" is part memoir, part writing guide. He shares his personal journey and offers practical advice on everything from grammar basics to developing a solid writing routine. His friendly, conversational tone makes this book a favorite.
"Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life" by Anne Lamott
Anne Lamott’s "Bird by Bird" is a classic, known for its humor and honesty. She gives honest advice on navigating the ups and downs of writing, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and being kind to yourself. It’s both practical and deeply encouraging.
"The Elements of Style" by William Strunk Jr. and E.B. White
"The Elements of Style" is a timeless guide to writing well. It covers the essentials of grammar, composition, and style with straightforward rules and examples to help writers improve the clarity of their work.
"The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles" by Steven Pressfield
Steven Pressfield’s "The War of Art" tackles the internal obstacles writers face, like procrastination and self-doubt. He offers tough-love advice on overcoming resistance and sticking to a creative routine. If you know that your writer friend is dealing with writer’s block, this might be the book to help inspire creativity.
6. Prompt Notebooks That Bust Writer’s Block
Another way to bust writer’s block, a prompt journal gives your writer a fun way to warm up their creative muscles with short, one-scene writing prompts.
I received a prompt book a few years ago that’s unfortunately no longer in print, but it was one of the best gifts I’ve received. Most writers have a hard time pulling themselves away from their current work in progress; this unique gift is a fun way to write for a little while without the pressure of a novel-length story.
7. Tickets to Writing Retreats

One of the more unique gifts for writers is tickets to a writing retreat. Writing retreats offer a peaceful escape where writers can leave behind their everyday distractions and dive deep into their craft. Picture a cozy cabin in the woods, a charming seaside cottage, or a historic estate with a literary vibe.
These retreats mix alone time with opportunities to connect with other writers, attend workshops, and get advice from experienced authors. It’s a perfect gift that not only fuels their creativity but also gives them a special time to focus on their writing. This thoughtful present is sure to be a memorable and inspiring experience for any writer.
8. Writing Space Upgrades
Writers spend a lot of time at their desks. A gorgeous fountain pen, a laptop stand to make their setup more ergonomically friendly, coffee mugs to hold the countless cups of coffee (my personal go-to gift for writers), or even a stress ball for writing those intense fight scenes all make great gifts.
On the other hand, a small escape from the writing desk is good for the soul - giftcards to coffee shops are always a great idea.
9. Writer Merch
Many writers love to show their passion for their craft to the world. Here are some “writer merch” ideas that are sure to bring a smile to any writer’s face:
T-Shirts and Apparel
A T-shirt with a witty writing-related quote or literary reference will always be a hit. Whether it’s a classic quote from a favorite author or a funny writerly pun, these shirts let writers wear their passion on their sleeve—literally. Hoodies, socks, and even scarves with literary themes also make cozy and stylish gifts.
Wine Glasses
If the writer in your life loves a good glass of chardonnay, a wine glass with a phrase like “Write Drunk, Edit Sober” might be perfect for sipping on their favorite adult beverage while they work on their next masterpiece.
Tote Bags and Book Bags
Tote bags with literary quotes or designs are both practical and stylish. Writers can use them to carry their notebooks, laptops, and books wherever they go. Look for designs featuring typewriters, book spines, or famous literary quotes to make the gift extra special.
Posters and Prints
Literary-themed posters and prints can brighten up a writer’s workspace. Inspirational quotes, vintage book covers, or minimalist designs of favorite books add a personal touch to their writing nook. These pieces of art can serve as daily inspiration.
Enamel Pins and Bookmarks
Small but meaningful, enamel pins featuring typewriters, quills, or bookish themes can be pinned to jackets, bags, or hats. Bookmarks with literary quotes or beautiful designs are perfect for marking their place in their latest read and make lovely, thoughtful gifts.
Candles and Scented Items
Scented candles with names like “Writer’s Retreat” or “Library” can create a cozy atmosphere for writing sessions. These candles often have scents like old books, coffee, or forest, making them perfect for sparking creativity and relaxation.

You can’t lose with a high-quality notebook or journal. Writers tend to carry them everywhere, and they always need more.
