Is Fourth Wing Becoming a TV Show? ACOTAR, Twilight, Throne of Glass, The Selection Adaptations!

If you’re like me, you’re part of a huge group of readers that’s always keeping an eye out for the next big book-to-screen adaptation…

And the streaming services have taken notice…

Which is why, in recent years, they’ve announced a massive number of projects based on some of our favorite stories.

I’ve done some digging to see where each of these projects is at to deliver you the *news*...

FOURTH WING - In progress, no release date

Coming to Prime, Emmy Award-winning Moira Walley-Beckett (Anne With an E, Breaking Bad) will lead the adaptation as showrunner, with Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society producing. Amazon plans to adapt all five books in The Empyrean series!

TWILIGHT - Greenlight, no release date

Twilight is making a comeback! (Did it ever actually leave?)

Netflix is creating an animated series based on Midnight Sun (Twilight from Edward’s perspective). Lionsgate Television is producing the show, with Stephenie Meyer involved as an exec producer.

Sinead Daley (Tell Me Lies) will write and produce the series, though no cast has been confirmed yet.

ACOTAR - Development stopped, rights still owned by Hulu

The TV adaptation of Sarah J. Maas’ A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) was announced for Hulu. However, the adaptation has faced setbacks. In early 2024, it was revealed the show is no longer in active development, and in July, showrunner Ronald D. Moore (Outlander) left the project. It’s not officially “cancelled” yet, but with its sustained popularity on TikTok, I’m not giving up yet.

THRONE OF GLASS - Probably shelved, rights still owned by Hulu

Back in September 2016, Hulu announced plans to make Throne of Glass series, with Kira Snyder (The 100) on board as the writer and Anna Foerster (Underworld: Blood Wars) set to direct the first episode.

However there have been zero updates since last year, which makes it sound like the project has been shelved.

HARRY POTTER - HBO, in casting

A Harry Potter TV series is set to arrive on HBO in 2026! The show will adapt all seven books, with each season focusing on one book. HBO confirmed that it’ll be a more detailed, faithful adaptation than the movies. Will the real Ginny Weasley please stand up?

Francesca Gardiner (Succession) is the showrunner and Mark Mylod is the director of several episodes, and J.K. Rowling is involved as an executive producer.

Casting for the main trio—Harry, Ron, and Hermione—has started!!! (They’ll looking for kid actors in the UK and Ireland right now.) Some big shoes to fill, but I’m excited to see who they pick.

THE SELECTION - Cancelled (again)

On May 30, 2023, Netflix confirmed they won’t be moving forward with a movie adaptation of The Selection series. This comes after several close calls over the years with constant rumors of the series going to TV or film.

Netflix will still have film rights for a few more years, which means they could reconsider or they can sell the rights to other studios.

RED QUEEN - In development, just going slow

Red Queen is being developed as a one-hour drama series for Peacock. There’s no release date yet.

Elizabeth Banks (our very own Effie Trinket!!) is set to executive produce, direct, and star in a supporting role. Author Victoria Aveyard is working with Beth Schwartz, known for her work on Arrow and Sweet Tooth, to write the script.

SUNRISE ON THE REAPING - Oh, it’s happening!!!

A few months ago, Suzanne Collins announced there would be a NEW installment of the Hunger Games coming for us on March 18, 2025. This will take place during the second Quarter Quell (AKA Haymitch’s games).

Within about 5 minutes of the book being announced, we found out that a new movie is coming with it! We can expect the film on November 20, 2026 and Francis Lawrence (the director of Catching Fire, Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2, and the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes) is on board.

Final Thoughts

There are so many good book-to-screen adaptations on the table, and I'm looking forward to seeing what we're able to see in the next few years. I'll keep updates here on the blog as they come!
